The Sun Rises for Setting Sun

A while back I did a post on Setting Sun and their string laden folky pop. They were compared to The Radar Brothers, Elliott Smith at his darkest and early Nick Drake. I did the post back in May prior to their release on Young Love Record and their national tour that would follow in June. Nearly nine months after that tour, they've just come back from their European tour filled with a renewed sense of energy.

So what did they do? Why they headed into the studio to record. They recorded Tom Petty's, "You Got Lucky," for the latest Buffet Libre DJ's compilation Rewind 2. As Gary Levitt of Setting Sun explains, “I’m so proud that I recorded, mixed, mastered and sent the track off to the Buffet Libre DJ’s in Spain the very next day. We just got back from our European tour on Christmas Eve with a December 27th deadline looming. It was started on Dec 26th and then sent off completed Dec 27th! It was a great exercise in having to let some things go. That’s 24 hours out the door complete! That’s old school style. That’s how records used to be made. Motown baby MOTOWN!!!”

You think he's excited? Check the tune out below and have some bonus ones while your at it! (as someone who hates Tom Petty...I actually really enjoyed the cover)

This is awesome. It's better than the original which is great. How can you hate Tom Petty?

He's one of three signs of the apocalypse...if you were to ever get Stevie Nicks, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty together in one room...the world will end.
